Did you know that in the state of New Hampshire physical therapy is direct access?

Most people tend to be familiar with the more traditional way of utilizing physical therapy, involving a visit to ones primary care doctor for an injury.  If at that time the physician feels that physical therapy may be helpful, he or she will hand you what is called a “referral” to receive physical therapy treatment.  Often times many insurance companies don’t even require a referral from a physician for someone to receive therapy!

In the state of New Hampshire physical therapy is actually deemed “direct access”.

What does it mean to be “direct access”?

Being a “direct access” state allows you to be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist without the need for a referral or prescription from a physician. This means that you no longer have to jump through hoops to schedule an appointment with your primary care just to get sent to see a physical therapist. You can see the therapist first!

How is Direct Access beneficial?

With the ability to schedule physical therapy without going through your primary care, one is able to cut medical expenses by eliminating the cost of one or more doctor’s visits. Studies have actually shown that there is considerable savings by utilizing direct access for physical therapy vs going through the route of obtaining a referral from a physician.

What are the exceptions?

As with anything there are exceptions to the rule.  Pending the specific insurance plan that you have, you may be required to get a referral prior to starting physical therapy. This is not overly common but it does exist. As a result, it is always important to familiarize yourself with the benefits and limitations of your specific insurance plan!

What if I need to see a physician in conjunction to physical therapy?

As physical therapists it is our duty and job to evaluate ones appropriateness for physical therapy. If your physical therapist determines that a further physician evaluation is necessary, you will be advised to schedule an appointment with your physician at that time.
